ABSTRACT

As enterprise architectures, intranets have become quite important because they are based on off-the-shelf Web software and are promoted by telecommunications, which hold the upper ground on data processing (DP). In most companies, the telecommunications department is independent from DP and responsible for all voice and data communications, whether local, regional, or long haul. In a growing number of cases, the communications department also has desktop computing under its wing. A major restructuring in IT is in full swing. With industry undergoing rapid change, companies are striving to improve customer service and create new market opportunities while swamping costs. Telecommunication’s mission has been rephrased as the responsibility for collapsing the distance between people and processes at a reasonable cost.
