ABSTRACT
Althoughrespiratorymuscles,andespeciallythediaphragm,aresometimesspoken ofasbeingdistinctfromskeletalmuscle,thisisafalseimpression.Asfarasis known,thebiochemistryandphysiologyoftherespiratorymusclesarethesameas anyskeletalmuscle,andtheonlydistinguishingfeaturesarepossiblytheiranatomy andpatternsofuse.Consequently,thefollowingreviewdescribesthebasic structure,physiology,andbiochemistryofavarietyofhumanandanimalmuscles, fewofwhicharespecificallyrespiratorymuscles.
