This chapter aims to compare the ability of a number of potentially pathogenic particles in terms of
their ability to induce inflammation and disease. The article will focus on the effects of a-quartz,
asbestos, and environmental particulate air pollution particles and how these different particles
activate epithelial cells and macrophages leading to inflammation.
