ABSTRACT

Aesthetic, tooth-colored dental restorations are becoming increasingly popular all over the world. For the restoration of anterior lesions, as well as for the treatment of smaller and medium-sized defects in the posterior region, direct composite filling materials are state of the art. For larger defects, prefabricated ceramic restorations such as inlays, onlays, veneers, and crowns are attached to the tooth structure with composite-based luting cements in combination with the adhesive technology. Because of the complexity of this topic, the present review concentrates only on polymer-based restorative composites rather than on the adhesive technology to facilitate comprehensibility.
