ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses formulation concerns related to the metalworking of aluminum and its alloys, with an emphasis on processes commonly performed by or focused on by aluminum producers. Included is a general discussion as well as more detailed discussions for rolling, hot processing other than rolling, and forming of finished food and beverage containers. This information should provide a basis for understanding the requirements for process fluids used in other applications such as wire drawing, general sheet forming, and machining, which are not discussed here but are described elsewhere, such as in Schey’s monograph [1]. The following discussion will apply generally to aluminum and its alloys, except where specific alloys are indicated.
