ABSTRACT

Paula and Blanche have just completed an important series of bioassays in order to determine which strain or strains of the wicked witch they will raise continuously in the laboratory. This laboratory colony will serve as their standard for population comparisons in all future experiments. Insects from two geographically separate populations in California-Fairfax (Marin County) and Pixley (Kern County)—were sent to Schaeferville in special quarantine shipping containers. Larvae and adults from tomato plants in and around Schaeferville were collected during a sweep-net competition in the university’s entomology department. All of the insects were transferred to artificial diet and first instars were randomly selected for testing.
