ABSTRACT
The cost of fuel constitutes a major part of the operating cost of a fluidized bed (FB) boiler. A gain
of even 0.5-1.0% in the combustion efficiency can save a large amount of money in terms of the
operating cost of the boiler over its lifetime. Since the expenditure on fuel is much greater than that
on sorbents, the impact of combustion efficiency on the operating cost is greater than that of the
sorbent-utilization performance of the boiler. A qualitative as well as quantitative understanding of
the process of combustion is indeed very important for a rational boiler design.
