ABSTRACT
C) (Botterill, 1986). Gases and solids in regions close to the
distributor, the solid feed-points and the secondary air-injection ports are at temperatures different
from those in the bulk of the bed. This thermal lag can be very important. In the case of coal, for
example, the heating rate of coal particles will likely influence its volatile release. Rates of
combustion, attrition and fragmentation are also affected by the rate of heat transfer to coal particles
(Salatino and Massimilla, 1989). The gas-to-particle heat transfer also governs the transient
response of the boiler furnace.
