ABSTRACT

Total ankle arthroplasty has been in a renaissance over the last decade. This second generation of ankle replacement prostheses appears to be more successful in providing pain relief for arthritic conditions while maintaining at least some of the function of the ankle joint (Figure 17.1 and Figure 17.2). Early and intermediate results of second-generation prostheses have been promising, pointing to trends of greater longevity than the earlier two generations of ankle arthroplasty, which were plagued by subsidence and mechanical failures.
