ABSTRACT

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of impairment and death in populations with Western lifestyles. The frequency and severity of this problem is well recognized, and advances are being made in our understanding of its pathobiology. Gradual progressive narrowing of the arterial lumen owing to evolution and expansion of a fibrous plaque impedes the flow of blood after more than 50 to 70% of the lumen diameter is obstructed.
