Cells continuously export, import, and recycle molecules over the plasma membrane

by fundamental processes that can be capitalized upon for efficient intracellular

delivery of bioactive macromolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids.

Proteoglycans emerge as key players in membrane transport, e.g., in the uptake of

polyamines, peptides, peptide-nucleic acid polyplexes, and microbes. This chapter

discusses proteoglycans in the context of endocytosis and CPP internalization.
