In the mid-1980s, we observed that brain neurons in culture adopted different
polarity patterns depending on the origin of the astrocytes on which they were
plated.1,2 It was particularly striking that dendrites would only develop when
neurons and astrocytes were derived from the same structure. This allowed us to
established a theoretical link between developmental morphogenetic programs and
positional information.
