The spice turmeric comes from the underground rhizomes of
Curcuma longa
. The center of domestication of turmeric is the Indian subcontinent. It is now cultivated in India, China, Taiwan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia. In India, turmeric is cultivated in almost all states; the main regions being the states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, and Kerala. Turmeric is also grown in Africa, Australia, Japan, Caribbean and Latin America-Jamaica, Haiti, Costa Rica, Peru, and Brazil.
