Whether drugs are given individually or in combination, some side effects or adverse reactions are inevitable and cannot be eliminated. For example, patients undergoing treatment with antineoplastic drugs (see Chapter 62) will experience expected side effects, such as hair loss (Figure 3.1). Nevertheless, many adverse effects of drugs, or

drug-drug interactions,

are either avoidable or may be substantially minimized.
