ABSTRACT
Microalgae are all the eukaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms, which present a great genetic variety. Some authors include in this definition prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms [1], such as the cyanobacteria. Phytoplankton, which comprise the autotrophic prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms suspended near the water surface, are the base of the aquatic life food chain.
