ABSTRACT

Members of the family Flacourtiaceae are tropical rain forest trees that are mainly characterized by their fruits, which are globose, often large, and woody. Examples of cytotoxic agents found in Flacourtiaceae are clerodane diterpene esters, corymbulosins A–C, which were isolated from an organic extract of the fruit of Laetia corymbulosa. Flacourtia jangomas Raeusch. is a treelet native to Burma that is found cultivated in a geographical area ranging from India to Hawaii. Homalium tomentosum Benth. is a deciduous, medium-sized tree that grows to a height of 40m and a diameter of 1m in the rain forests of Southeast Asia. An exciting development from this plant is the observation that the oil of Hydnocarpus increases the strength of scar tissue and strengthens the collagen tissue in wounds inflicted on male Wistar rats; hence some cosmetological and or dermatological application may be possible.
