ABSTRACT

Focal brain injury usually refers to a contusion or damage to the surface of the brain that contains the brain cells that regulate our behavior, cognition, and emotions. Contusions frequently occur after an individual sustains a blow to the head, which causes the skull to bend inward and strike the surface of the brain beneath the point of impact (coup contusion), whereas contusions to the brain opposite the site of impact are known as contrecoup contusions. Blows to the front of the head will typically produce coup contusions, while blows to the back of the head will typically produce contrecoup contusions to the anterior frontal and temporal lobes.
