The traditional objects of colloidal chemistry are dispersions: small parts of a substance (termed the disperse phase) that are uniformly distributed in another substance (termed the dispersion medium) (Hunter 2001). Colloidal dispersions are distinct from molecular solutions. In the latter case, the smallest possible parts (molecules or atoms) of the substance (termed the solute) are uniformly distributed in another substance (termed the solvent).
