ABSTRACT

Television display tubes are a mature product, made in large quantities by a few plants scattered around the world. Color display tubes for TV sets are made in typical mass production plants. The latest and possibly last generation of TV display tubes features large, flat screens with rectangular pixels. To convert energy into visible light, a sheet metal mask (shadow mask) with rectangular holes is placed inside of the tube behind the screen to align an electron beam with dots of phosphorous. The schematic view of such a display tube is shown in Figure C4-2. This is also called CRT (cathode-ray-tube).
