ABSTRACT
A hormone is a chemical messenger through which messages are transmitted between different cells or tissues in a multicellular organism. Hormones are synthesized and secreted by specialized cells known as endocrine glands from which they are transported to their target tissues through the blood stream. This is the classical de nition of the endocrine effects of hormones. The location of classical endocrine glands is shown in Figure 7.1.
