ABSTRACT

There are two branches of the topic generally known as “corrosion.” Firstly there is “failure analysis,” i.e., the forensic studies that reveal the possible causes of a failure, and secondly there is “ corrosion science,” i.e., the study of metals with the ultimate purpose of developing alloys with a better corrosion performance under given conditions. The two elds are strongly interrelated since the

forensic study provides an understanding of the conditions that new alloys must tolerate, and the scienti c study provides the understanding that relates particular symptoms of corrosion to a probable mechanism of failure.
