ABSTRACT

The lighting discussed in Chapter 4 is applicable to the vast majority of roads but there are still a number of locations that require special treatment, for a number of reasons. Some, such as tunnels, pose visual problems during the day. Some, such as pedestrian crossings, railway crossings, and car parks, are places where vulnerable individuals are exposed to hazards. Some, such as intersections, are high-risk areas because traffic streams cross and merge. Some, such as road works, may temporarily restrict traffic flow in an unexpected manner. Some, such as roads near docks and airports, may cause confusion to other forms of transport. This chapter is devoted to how conventional road lighting should be adapted to cope with these special locations.
