ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the current issues and challenges in the field of wireless multimedia services and applications. It deals with real-time Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia services including the evolution from short to multimedia messaging services. The chapter explores the information technology -based service delivery platform deployment. It examines the current IP Multimedia System policy control to update the significant changes in the core network. The chapter focuses on real-time multimedia services and the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) IP multimedia subsystem that enables these services in UMTS. It draws on the evolution from short message service SMS, to enhanced messaging services, to multimedia messaging service (MMS). MMS is an innovative messaging system, standardized by both the Wireless Application Protocol Forum and Third Generation Partnership Project. MMS has been defined through a standardization process aimed at integrating different media.
