ABSTRACT

Mounting evidence suggests small RNAs regulate the fundamental cellular processes of development, differentiation, metabolism, and apoptosis. Aberrant small RNA expression has been identified in numerous disease states; thus, accurate small RNA quantification is critically important for defining and characterizing disease and normal conditions. The biological question as well as the sample amount and quality will ultimately limit the researcher to one or two profiling technologies; here, we review methods for small RNA quantification highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
