ABSTRACT

The sustainable future of Venice does not look good. Indeed, Fay and Knightly concluded their groundbreaking 1976 book with the pessimistic statement that “there is no hope of saving her.” And almost 30 years later, one of the prefaces to Fletcher and Spencer’s (2005)2 comprehensive tome about Venice’s environmental challenges posits that time seems to be running out for this loveliest of cities. Rather than succumbing to apathy, however, Venetians and the international community have implemented a series of interventions designed to preserve this Queen of the Adriatic.
