ABSTRACT
Diatoms are one of the largest, if not the largest, group of cryptogamic photosynthetic organisms, in terms of species diversity. This chapter address some of the basic issues concerning the history of alpha taxonomy and the study of diatom diversity, exploring future possibilities from the perspective of their geography.
