ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we dealt with “linear” equations which did not involve powers or products of the unknowns. A common form of “nonlinear” equations which frequently arises in practice does contain such powers, for example,

x31 − 2x1x2 + x22 = 4 x1 + 4x1x2 + 3x22 = 7 (3.1)

would be a pair of nonlinear equations satisfied by various combinations of x1 and x2.
