ABSTRACT

Numerical integration or “quadrature” is used whenever analytical integration approaches are either inconvenient or impossible to perform. Numerical integration techniques can be applied to mathematical functions, or discrete data that might be measured in an engineering experiment. Initially in this chapter, we will consider methods for numerical integration of a function of one variable, i.e.,

f(x) dx (6.1)

although area and volume integrals of functions of more than one variable will also be considered subsequently.
