ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters we have considered the semisupervised learning algorithms that are most familiar in computational linguistics. In the rest of the book, we turn to methods from the machine learning literature. We do not assume that the reader’s primary area of research is machine learning, nor that the reader is necessarily familiar with all the mathematical techniques that are taken for granted in the primary literature of machine learning. For that reason, we include chapters that do not treat semisupervised learning per se, but provide necessary background material, beginning with the present chapter, on classification.
