Orphan sequence: a sequence with no clear evolutionary relationship with any known sequence
Sometimes, admittedly increasingly rarely, a similarity search does not find any sequence significantly similar to our query. This is a nightmare for any bioinformatician! It is very frustrating to look at a long series of amino acids with no additional information, especially if a biologist is staring at you with a very hopeful and impatient look.
