ABSTRACT

James Yorke teamed up with T. Y. Li to write in 1975 the best known paper to the general public “Period three implies Chaos.” In this paper the word “Chaos” was coined and henceforth became one of the most celebrated subjects in mathematics and a wide range of disciplines. Yorke was awarded the 2003 Japan Prize in recognition of his contributions as a founder and leader of Chaos Theory. (He shared the prize with Benoit Mandelbrot). His recent research interests range from chaos theory and weather prediction to genome research to the population dynamics of the HIV/AIDS epidemics. Yorke received his PhD. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland in 1966. He is a distinguished professor of mathematics and Physics at the University of Maryland and serves as a consulting editor of the Journal of Difference Equations and Applications.
