ABSTRACT

We indicated earlier that for a long time the only all known projective planes of non-square order were, up to duality, semifield, nearfield or Andre´ planes, Definition 16.3. In this chapter we consider the λ-planes of Foulser, usually called generalized Andre´ planes. The generalized Andre´ planes are also never (proper) semifield planes, and include all the Andre´ planes as well as the non-exceptional nearfield planes as a proper subset. In particular, the λ-planes furnish examples of planes of non-square order that are neither Andre´ nor nearfield planes.
