ABSTRACT
The term stereotacticmeans the three-dimensional localisation of a particular point in space
by a unique set of coordinates that relate to a fixed, external reference frame. Historically, such a
frame has acted as a support for hollow probes that have carried either electrodes or biopsy
needles to precise locations within either an animal or human brain, based on the analysis of
plane and orthogonal x-ray films of the subject in the frame.
