ABSTRACT

Many different organisations are concerned with radiation protection. The International

Commission for Radiological Protection (ICRP), originally founded in 1928 by the

International Society of Radiology (ISR), is an international body with charitable status

whose remit is to function as an advisory body providing recommendations and guidance on

radiation protection. It operates through a number of task groups convened for specific purposes

and is composed of a main commission and four standing committees dealing with radiation

effects, doses from radiation exposure, protection in medicine, and the application of ICRP

recommendations*. A sister organisation, the International Commission on Radiological

Units (ICRU), deals largely with issues related to the measurement of ionising radiation*.
