In this chapter, we will briefly go through the basics of an NMR experiment. Naturally, because this is not the topic of this book, the presentation will be brief. For readers interested in details concerning NMR experiments and methodology see the further reading section in the Preface (for instance, the books by Levitt, Ernst et al., or Cavanagh et al.). Pulsed NMR offers the possibility for the experimenter to create and monitor complicated nonequilibrium states. In the following, we will go through the tools available in NMR spectroscopy with an emphasis on relaxation experiments.
