In this chapter, we present applications and results of the Redfield theory. We restrict discussion to systems of spin 1/2 nuclei; nuclei with spin 1 or higher (quadrupolar nuclei) will be the subject of Chapter 14. So far, we have only been concerned with dipolar relaxation involving two coupled spins. However, other interactions also vary with time through stochastic processes related to molecular motion. We begin this chapter by looking at some features of dipolar relaxation in systems consisting of more than two spins and then proceed to deal with relaxation effects originating from other interactions involving spin 1/2 nuclei. In particular, relaxation through the anisotropic chemical shift is important in many spin 1/2 systems.
