ABSTRACT

The most important inorganic forms of nitrogen in wetlands treating municipal or domestic wastewater are ammonia (NH4+), nitrite (NO2−), nitrate (NO3−), nitrous oxide (N2O), and dissolved elemental nitrogen or dinitrogen gas (N2). Nitrogen is also invariably present in FWS wetlands in organic forms. Both dissolved and particulate forms may be present, but in most cases there is little particulate nitrogen in settled wetland surface waters.
