ABSTRACT
In some cases, characterization of sources involves defining the interaction between a human
activity and a natural process. For example, assessing risks to streams from runoff of
sediment from a clear-cut forest involves the natural processes of precipitation, runoff, and
recovery of vegetation. Hence, the source characterization involves geohydrologic models
with ecological components (Ketcheson et al. 1999).
