ABSTRACT

Congratulations! You have mastered most, if not all, of the chapters in this handbook. You have an intriguing research question, a great research design and a detailed plan as to how you will collect your data, analyze the results, and prepare a report. However, there will be costs involved, such as mailings and printing, and there are the opportunity costs for your time and the time of your research colleagues and associates. How will these costs be paid for? And would it not be nice to send the leaders of your organization-the provost, dean, or executive director-some funds to pay for the space, telephone, computer, and supervisory and support staff that are also related to the costs of your research? Why should you settle for doing it all without any additional compensation and no reimbursement of costs? After all, when you reach out to the auto mechanic, the plumber, the dry cleaner, hair dresser, and computer technician, they all want compensation for their services, and rightly so. How about you and your work as a researcher?
