ABSTRACT
The comprehensive risk management approach as presented in Chapter 1 may indicate that a threat to be addressed involves the use of explosive devices. Therefore one must understand explosive devices and their capabilities and have a good understanding of explosive effects and the processes that generate them. This chapter provides a general background on these topics.
