Food legislation has important functions-it protects and sets the standard for the

market, and guarantees the safety of consumers. However, through the years, those

factors have changed due to the development of new foods, new habits, new

technologies and new discoveries. It is important that these new foods are in

accordance with some appropriate standard but it is also important to have flexible

legislation that is able to keep up with those changes.
