Obesity, a worldwide epidemic, is associated with an increased risk for diverse

cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis, thrombosis, hypertension, hyper-

insulinemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. Obesity is characterized

by an excess of fat mass caused by adipocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia.

Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels, is one

rate-limiting factor that supports the development of adipose tissue during obesity.
