ABSTRACT

TABLE VII-1 Energies of Interaction (ΔGLW) and Forces of Interaction of (FLW) of Unretarded Lifshitz-van der Waals Interaction, for a Number of Configurations, as a Function of Distance,

(Mahanty and Ninham, 1976). (At the height of the retardation regime, the rate of decay is proportional to –3, instead of –2). The reversal to the nonretarded regime at large distances has not yet been verifi ed experimentally (probably hampered by the fact that at large distances dispersion forces are very weak indeed and thus diffi cult to measure with any degree of precision). Retardation effects at ≈ 50 to 1,000 Å in vacuo have been confi rmed experimentally by Derjaguin and Abrikossova (1951, 1954) and by Overbeek and Sparnaay (1952), and Israelachvili and Adams (1978), and in liquids (mica-coated cylinders in water) by Israelachvili (1985); see also Chapter XII.
