ABSTRACT

Organic farming has become the most highly valued method of sustainable production in the agriculture and food trade. The growing organic market is an important factor in farmers’ decisions to convert from conventional farming. Organic farming systems are diverse and occur throughout the world. They are linked by common objectives of economic, environmental, and social sustainability. In many countries, organic farming has a clear legislative basis and certification schemes for production and processing. Crop rotations, sequences, and space in the form of cover crops, agroforestry, crop/livestock mixtures, and so forth can enhance diversity through intercropping. The reasons for organic farming expansion are numerous and they vary from country to country. Consumer interest has grown in response to repeated food-safety scares and animal-welfare concerns, among others regarding the impact of industrial agriculture on the environment. Organic farming is a promising agricultural method with positive effects on the human ecological and social environment.
