In his preface to Volume 1 of Plasticizer Technology, Paul F. Bruins wrote in 1965 that ‘‘the technology relating to plasticizers has been discussed in many books and technical articles but, despite this, research people and others in the (polymer) industry find the selection of the optimum plasticizer system a difficult task.’’ Forty years later, nothing much has changed. The problem may stem from the almost overwhelming variety of esters, process oils, waxes, and factices, which are available to the compounder.
