The term elastomer is used in the energy industry to refer to rubber compounds and parts used in oil tools for the exploration, drilling, and production of oil, gas, and geothermal energy . Elastomers used herein may either be natural rubber or synthetic polymers. Although both types are used extensively in the oil field, this discussion will be limited to those typically considered to be ‘‘oil and heat resistant.’’
Though a library of information details material properties of elastomers used in the oil field, the following gives a synopsis of commonly used elastomers based on three key aspects: price, function, and chemical and temperature compatibility.
