ABSTRACT
New requirements in terms of bandwidth are encouraging the evolution of access networks to provide more transmission capabilities to satisfy new application demands. This evolution inherently requires the deployment of an access optical
infrastructure, as copper-based solutions cannot provide enough bandwidth. This evolution, however, needs to be gradual in order to have a viable economic model because deployment costs are very high. In this chapter, we will introduce different scenarios of fiber deployments in access and the possible applications of coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) to enhance fiber access solutions.
