678 Biocatalysis in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries
Michael North, guest editor of the Tetrahe dron Sympos ium in Print Number 109, has
summarized in his preface the most important actual research activities on the synthesis
and applications of nonracemic (chiral) cyanohydrins [1]. Since the beginning of remarkable
research activities on chiral cyanohydrins in 1987 [2], several excellent review articles on
this topic have been published [3-12]. For this reason, this chapter only discusses the
developments of the last 5 y in synthesis and applications of nonracemic cyanohydrins with
special emphasis on applications of hydroxynitrile lyases (HNLs) as chiral catalysts.
