ABSTRACT

In addition to scholarships, grants, or waivers you may still need extra money. Providing a college education today (and, even more so, tomorrow) can cost as much as buying a house. It’s going to require some careful advance planning. (For more information, call the Federal Student Aid information Center, 800-333-4636.)

There has been a shift in the balance in federal aid to students. This trend does not seem likely to reverse anytime soon. Moreover, with government assistance to higher education being cut back and current tax law changes, it will become increasingly difficult for schools to raise money from private sources. Thus, planning for college costs means planning to hit an even higher target.
