ABSTRACT

This case combines many concepts described in Section II and other case studies. These include the value of partnerships, cellular manufacturing, increasing velocity in the supply chain, inserting a “consolidation center” into the supply chain, and improving return on capital investments. As we describe the case, we point out strategic “themes” used by Miller SQA as foundations for its supply chain design. Chapter 7 described Michael Porter’s model using strategic themes and activity systems and its application to supply chains. We apply the activity system model in this case description to illustrate its application. The supply chain design also incorporated the design philosophy of Marshall Fisher by creating an “innovative” product from a functional one by virtue of the speedy delivery capability built into the supply chain. Chapter 6 describes this model. The case also describes deployment of advanced systems for customer interface and control of the operation including those described in Chapter 22.
